    Das Edelweiss, Hitler's Favorite Flower

I wasn't sure where to post this thread, but since the item has a political theme, I thought I would post it here. When I was a teenager, I remember watching The World at War episodes, and in one of these episodes, they played a song called Adolf Hitlers Lieblungsblume ist das schlichte Edelweiß (Adolf Hitler's Favorite Flower is the Simple Edelweiß) over film footage of Hitler. This song was recorded in 1933 by Harry Steier, who died on 16 January 1936 (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Steier), with the Otto Dobrindt Ochestra playing the music. At the bottom of this thread, I have posted a link to the recording of this song and the lyrics.

At a military collectors' show in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in July, I found this interesting souvenir, which was most likely sold at one of the Nürnberg Rallys between 1933 and 1936. The wall plaque measures approximately 3" in diameter and has the following text: Die Lieblungsblume des Führers, Gruß aus Nürnberg, der Stadt des Parteitages (The Favorite Flower of the Führer, Hello from Nürnberg, the Party Day City). Behind the clear-plastic cover are two perfectly preserved Edelweiß flowers.

    Edelweiss

That is awesome! I just love stuff that is associated with the edelweiss and yours is connected to the RPT as well. Just one of those small things that you don't see very often but are very interesting. Congrats on a special find.

Interestingly, the song was put on the 'forbidden to be played' list in 1934. There was no explanation or reason, although I suspect it was because of the extreme kitschiness of the song and schmaltzy performance.

Very interesting. I wonder if there were Obersalzberg or Berchtesgaden examples made.

                Hi,

Great thread, with interesting items and information.
I well recall myself, many years ago hearing this music on TV over film of Hitler.
Have often thought about searching online for the tune, now I do not need to!

                Many thanks for the link, and for showing the collectables;

                Best wishes,

                John.
