A while back I read a thread concerning acceptable RZM type markings and m/m's on Nuremburg desk eagles . I did a search but cant find it . Can anyone put me on that thread or maybe chime in on what markings to look for on a legitimate eagle ? Thanks guys .

Hi Craig, plenty of info in these WAF threads:

http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...remberg+eagles
HB, M3/28, RZM3/90, RZM 3/100, There are original examples of all these makers and there are also plenty of original examples of unmarked ones as well,

Yes, Michael's correct- I think this would be the best thread so far for reference. However it covers (as you want it) only Nuremberg styled eagles.

Seems like there was a code being used on some repo's that was a bogus number and a definate tip off for a fake ? Another question after reviewing the links , on the last link in post #8 showing the reverse of the eagle the features look pretty rough and lack detail toward the center . I guess this is acceptable for this eagle and which maker if any is it ? Thanks again guys .

.....reverse of the eagle the features look pretty rough and lack detail toward the center....Craig H
Good Observation, the features of these birds are rough. As discussed previously, the reason being:
The eagle you refer to in post#8 is the rally sold version of the rzm/100presentation Nuremberg eagle of the same size. These are exactly the same in size and features as the presentation versions but are a lower quality, heavier bronze-plated zink cast knock-off of the awarded ones which is why the details are no where near as sharp and show casting marks.
These are never found with multi-piece marble bases or dedication inscriptions as they were a cheap table eagle sold at party events, rallys and the like, and this is why today dealers sell them for much less than half the price of the lighter hollow cast presentation examples, these cheap table birds have a distinctive casting flaw dot on the left of the centre-upper arm of the swaz and the original marble base was always brown/white which is what to look for on the originals.
Believe it or not, even these birds have been copied and faked as well. While I don't particularly like these birds that much myself and there are many other supposed "rally desk eagles" that have may have nicer details, these have to be mentioned as this type is the only one that has been accepted as original with examples found with various provenances.
Best Regards,
MichaelAttached Files

And while I'm waffling on about Nuremberg eagles, I feel that I had better mention this one currently for sale on Thomas Wittmann's website. Obviously, I can't go as far as calling it a fake in public........ but it is NOT an accepted original and as the saying goes, IMHO "I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot barge pole"Attached Files

............You make this up as you went along?. Where is your data Dr. Mlop............J.Wraith
I happily admit that there is plenty I don't know about these birds and am alway keen to learn more about them. I have picked up a couple of useful bits of info about them along the way though and want to help folks not make some of the mistakes I've made over the years.
Plenty of good info in previous threads on this and other forums, books, dealers sites and collectors websites about these, and by all means, please correct me and disagree with anything or everything that I say, that is how we continue to learn about them and everything else in our hobby......
Best Regards,
Michael

Your making some fairly definitive statements in that post, its fine to do that but its written as if it were fact, i think we all do that on occasion to be honest but when i read that i was a bit startled. Most all of these pieces are catalog pieces, while there may be some merit to presentation chooces for bases the reality is you can find dedication bases on single tier bases.
Because they are catalog items the variables for bases is limited but gives enough for one who has eyeballed enough of them to recognize a period base. It will not dictate what was available where for sale such as a rally ground or storefront propaganda shop. You could have any one of them dedicated. The base metals are essentially the same with the patina or the applied finish being a variable or choice.
Without being present at a rally hou cant say the tiered base was a rally piece especially given the various presentations that have nothing at all to do with a rally. I would venture to say that like most items there was a price point involved and cost then would be no different than buying on a cost basis now. So in the end we dont have the answers to make those calls and when looking at the market and whats out there it would be easier to draw an entirely different conclusion based not just solely on these birds but other items, their marketing, and their process of manufacture. When you do that you just have multiple manufacturers and styles with optioned finishes and bases available to the purchaser at that time.
