          Hi,

Followed the link and watched the complete movie today.
Not very impressed, I'm afraid; Nazi propaganda at its most puerile.
May have worked on people in 1933 - not today!
Thought several times to give up, but had to watch it all to judge the total content.
I do not think I will watch this again, each to their own; but not for me,
Had more enlightening experiences watching "The Waltons" - and that is saying something

          Best wishes,

          John.

            Hello John.

You may be missing the point a bit, at least from my point of view. Where you say it may have worked in the 1930's is exactly why it's watchable, not just the story and filming but how it fits as part of history.

I might find a Trabant a piece of crap as a car but I find it interesting in how it fits into East German history .... If that makes sense.

            Cheers,
            Chris.

John, You have totally missed the point, of course it is propaganda of the time, but the movie is based on the real story of Horst Wessel (Hans Westmar in the film) and indeed acted out by real SA men who were involved at the time. Not sure if you had expected a Spielberg type blockbuster with special effects and surround sound? The story told is one of the cornerstones of the NSDAP folklore , I think if you did not find the film interesting or powerful then you may be better collecting Waltons based memorabilia?

                Hi gents,

Anyone want to put in a serious bid on my John Boy Walton dungarees?
Did not expect to be overwhelmed by watching "Hans Westemar" but found it quite predictable and tedious.
Fair enough, the picture and sound quality left a lot to be desired; which made viewing a chore rather than a pleasurable experience.
Have watched several TR related movies "Triumph Of The Will" etc, over the years and these have been OK (although rather repetitive) and I keep them in my collection of TR films of which I have approximately ten.
What is the "true" story of Horst Wessel?
A Nazi martyr, or a pimp who was killed over a disagreement over cash?
I certainly do not know, and I believe that even at the time doubts were expressed about his death.
Goebbels said "he was a dreamer" and the "Horst Wessel Lied" was apparently plagiarized from a WW1 German Navy tune which was popular at the time.
                Who knows?

                Best wishes,

                John.

The best book about Horst Wessel is a recent volume by Daniel Siemens, "The Making of a Nazi Hero--The Death and Myth of Horst Wessel". Everything you could possibly want to know about Wessel is researched and referenced in this work, including the origin of the 'pimp' story.
Re-the Hans Westmar film: the re-mastered digital DVD sold by International Historic Film is the best copy I've found with much better video and sound than any that have been available over the last 30 years. While it's certainly a propaganda film, and IMO not up to the standard of "Hitler Youth Quex" (loosely based on the story of Herbert Norkus), it's not a bad film if viewed with the era, place, and intended audience in mind.
                  Erich
                  Festina lente!
