Hans westmar

Hello.

I have just watched the propoganda film 'Hans Westmar' on youtube.
If you are not familiar, it is based closely to the last year of Horst wessel's life. It is surprisingly watchable.

It is good quality and has sub titles (for those with schoolboy german like me).

There are a couple of scenes that I had always thought were real footage but are from the film, one being the scene where SA musicians are marching and have scuffles with Red front bystanders.

One anecdote I've read this morning was that during filming, KPD members believed some of the actor extras to be real SA men. They attacked them and the real SA were called out to protect the filming.

Anyway, it may be of interest to some.

I've not watched this one as yet. I know the footage you speak of and thought it was "real" period as well. I'm sure Dr G would have used any real extras his people could rope in.

Yes, I though that. It was anecdotal from the net so could be nonsense. Nice story though I suppose ...

Erich, I thought they were SA men until searching for more info'.

There is very little information about the film that I can find. For instance, trying to get much information about the leading actor, Emil Lohkamp, is nigh on impossible.
I was interested to see if his career ended with the Third Reich or not but I can't even find a date of death.

Sorry to raise this thread but the following may be of interest on a trivial level about the SA and the film.

I have been reading 'The Making of a Nazi Hero' - The Murder and Myth of Horst Wessel - by Daniel Siemens.

I haven't finished reading the book yet but I've found it to be very informative about the SA and communist clashes in Berlin. The book has a lot of new information from the former East Germany.

Anyway, with regards to the Hans Westmer film:

'Preview audiences were deeply impressed by the many - extrememly realistic - mass scenes, in which appearences were made by the fourth, fifth and sixth Berlin-Brandenburg SA-Standarte, corps, students from Normannia, and a police unit.
Filming was apparently so lifelike that some of the extras actually got violent while shooting a brawl scene.

A newspaper reported:
'The few policemen with the task of clearing the hall were put to flight so that shooting had to be called off in order to explain to the overzealous fighters that the police were supposed to win here ... the police for their part saw the reputation on the line and went after the 'enemy' with genuine enthusiasm during the second take, resulting in the most realistic shots imaginable.'


Of the funeral scene:
A crowd scene filmes in the working class district of Wedding escalated in a similar manner when the locals, still strongly sympathetic to the Communists, took the actor Communistst for the real thing and, rallying to the old battle cries, rushed to the aid of the presumed comrades, pouncing on the real SA men as well as the police. Hanfstaengel's conclusion: a day of real chaos but first rate shots.

I found it very interesting anyway!

IHF has a digitally remastered copy of 'Hans Westmar' that offers the best quality version of the film I've seen.
The Siemens book is, and IMO will remain, the definitive Horst Wessel biography.

Hans Westmar obviously and Hitlerjugend Quex are available on youtube with subs but I can't find the Brand film. I got hold of a copy on the net but cancelled as I realised it was without subtitles.
