    Political Leader's Uniform

I just purchased this political leader's uniform from an eighty-four-year-old German woman who brought it with her when she immigrated to the United States in 1955. It appears to be a very early political uniform 9I say this because the gold buttons do not have an eagle and swastika). It lacks any insignia (perhaps it was unissued?) and does not have an RZM tag. I'd like to know the following:

    1) Is it, in fact, a political uniform?
    2) What period is it from?
    3) What insignia would have been applied to it? Collar tabs, armband, etc.
    4) What would something like this be worth? It's a small size; however, it is in perfect condition.

Barry, it has the cut of a later model tunic that I have that carries post-1939 insignia. My earlier tunic has sculpted side pocket flaps whereas these are cut straight across like my later tunic. As far as I now, tunic button color was also a reflection of the rank/level of authority of the PL. I was not aware that smooth buttons were ever used.

Perhaps this was an unused tunic, salvaged by the woman after the war and equipped with new buttons for use. I would check with John Clark.

John will certainly know the answer! For me, the buttons are a big concern since I believe that even the much earlier PL Traditions Brown Shirt had gold buttons stamped with the eagle/swaz. And I believe that this style tunic also had two buttons at the top of the pleats in the center of the back. Also missing is the colored piping that would have been along the edge of the upper collar and around the deep cuff turn-ups, in addition to the collar tabs and the armband.

James, I forgot about the belt buttons on the rear of the tunic. Weren't the tunics for the Ordensburg schools without piping?

Barry, do the buttons carry any markings and do they seem professionally sewn?

I also considered whether this might be a Ordensburg/Napola tunic, especially because it is such a small size. I worked for a professional tailor years ago and I can say for sure that the buttons have not been replaced and are professionally sewn. The reverse of the buttons do not have any markings at all. As a point of interest, the woman I acquired the jacket from said that it belonged to her neighbor's son, who in 1945, was called up by the Waffen SS.

The buttons may have been professionally resewn, but IMO they're likely to be replacements. Judging by the missing belt support buttons on the back, it's quite possible the tunic was stripped and then had buttons applied sometime later. It makes sense, as the original buttons would have had the eagle and swastika, and many tunics and caps were stripped of their 'offensive' insignia. I'm sure it was easier to find the pebbled military style buttons to resew than political leader buttons.
