I've heard that same story - don't know if it's true, but I never see SA tabs like that, except for those only. Germans generally didn't waste material like that. If you could pry the wool up, and expose the backing, we'd probably know the truth.Comment

Post some real closeup pics, so you can see the wool thickness, and the fold areas where it looks like maybe some glue. Where are the extra threads coming from? Some of the flaps appear to be double-folded. Yes? If the wool is loose, pull it back so you can photograph the backing, even a small area. Closeup of embroidery too.Comment

Thanks for the comprehensive photos - that helps a lot. On one hand, the embroidery looks legit. On the other hand, I don't like the wool thickness and I don't like the glue. Tabs were made with 2 steps in one. The animal fat-based stiffener was used to make the backing stiff, and once it was tacky, also served to adhere the wool to the backing. This adherent excess sometimes glues wool to wool, but generally, little effort was spent glueing wool to wool. If the edges were trimmed like normal SA tabs, this extra glue isn't necessary. And where the wool IS glued to wool, if it's peeled up, there's NEVER a gob of glue, because it absorbs into the wool. The wool thickness could be because it's wool felt, which is thicker than woven wool. These tabs could be offered as original, simply because of the story out there that they are. It is my understanding that these tabs along with early political leader insignia was found in the mid 1990's in storage in the back of a firm that used to be an RZM store in what had been East Germany. The SA tabs were from numerous differnt sturm, mainly from the same Standarte. They were mainly found uncut and the dealer who bought them cut them up and mounted them on buckram. There were a few mounted SA tabs in brown but the uncut were all the apple green.Comment

That could explain why the embroidery looks legit, but the rest sucks.The dealer who cut them up, and mounted them on buckrum was obviously NOT RZM licensed
. This is a job for the Sicherheitsdienst to investigate!!

I have some of these, some on buckram and some as found, ill post some photos, these are appealing and on the cheaper end. If the person who found these were up to no good id expect a deluge of other coloured tabs from him, he certainly fooled many dealers over the years if they are fake!Originally posted by Bob Coleman View PostComment
