Tab
My German Shepherd, Ernst, also thinks it's a seven. He also agrees with me that the loop is too small to be a "2". He's very agreeable when I'm holding a sandwich. Besides......assuming the metal numerals are original to the tab, if it was an upside-down "2", we'd have to believe the guy didn't know what unit he was in. He'd be the SA's version of Sad Sack.

As wewelsburg says: it is 100% a 7.
Just have a look in a cataloque as for example F.W. Assmann, 1937-issue, page 4. The number is in the row with numbers from 1 through 0 and phrased as Arabische Zahl mit circa 2 mm hoher Facettekante (article-number 10231/20 mm and 10230/18 mm), available in light-weight metal in white or golden colored.
The number 1 looks as being from the same series, but the number 1 from the patch has a "bulge" at upper right!

Tab
Now.......the bigger question - are the metal numerals original to the tab? I have an early, light grey, PLAIN unit-side tab that is undeniably original. But there is no SA regulation I can find for such a color. Was this a blank green tab that someone gussied up.....................or.........a rare early tab?

The real reason for the thread, I dont know if its a 2 or 7 either way, I was waiting for the first person to mention the devices, metal devices on an SA tab? Weve discussed this before and havent had the definate answer...

Metal Numerals
In Angolia's SA/NSDAP Cloth Insignia book - Pg.190 - shows a pre-1933 collar tab with metal numerals. Pg. 191 shows an SA jr. officer, also with metal numerals. These are the only 2 photos I've seen of this practice (Not counting the teeny-tiny metal numbers that Standarte commanders wore). From what I've seen, few SA unit tabs were ever blank unit tabs - Early Flieger SA, Oder or Sudmark wore blank pink unit tabs. The tab could be completely legit, but we'll probably never know.
