I know Ron, I wish I could locate the award document. Apparently, this is all that was there. He had a lot of sports memorabilia, which the kids kept. They told the cleaning lady that she could have the medal because "it was just some Nazi medal my dad won during the Olympics". I'm so glad I was able to rescue it.

Unsure on the engraving Erich. It has a very nice diamond cut with seriffs to the font. Wherever it was done, the jeweler had some skill. I have never encountered another Olympic medal with engraving so I don't know what the procedure would have been.

I agree with Erich regarding the engraving being possibly done in the US. Other than the style, Hitler's title and presentation would have been written in German. With that being said, it's a wonderful find and congrats!

Swallow pride and pay the housekeeper to take you two to talk with family abuet medal and award. There may be photos or papers still with the family and obviously they don't understand the significance of it remaining together
I will be at St. Charles show this weekend and would really love to see it.

Simply amazing! Both the find and the award itself. Other than Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh, one does not hear of many US citizens being awarded National Socialist era medals, and engraved too. Good show!

            Regards,

            Marcus

This is the most exciting thing I've seen this year. I would say def engraved post war or at least in the US. It's similar to the font used on some purple hearts is it not?

Thanks Jon, I appreciate it! One of my best finds for sure. I'm currently working with the family to see what additional information and/or items could still be there.

Mark, I'm glad for you. I think the value on that whilst hard to nail as it is so unique, with that letter and provenance would be over 3k
Check this link it has some great examples of engraving, some very similar to your medal from the same period in the US, towards the end of the page

Great link Jon. The engraving on the purple hearts look very similar to mine. Nice find! I wonder why he chose to use "Chancellor Adolf Hitler" for the engraving. What would have been the proper procedure for having this medal engraved? These are the questions I would like to have answered.

Chancellor would have been the correct title during the 1930s--after receiving the cross he would have taken it to a jewelry store and ordered the engraving. The engraver would show him the styles available and he would choose his preference.
IMO it was engraved in the 1930s, probably just after he received it.
                      It is a super piece!

This find gives me a great source of inspiration to keep beating the brush for this stuff as it is obviously still out there. I need to start stopping at garage sales again and estate auctions again. More time out and about and less in front of this screen. A priceless find. Much kudos and congrats!! I would bet the older members of his family have some great stories to tell. This is great.

Thanks Erich for the information on the engraving. Good to know.

Yes, it's still out there. You just have to look a little longer and closer to find nice items. A great piece for sure and I'm honored to own it. I'm just glad it didn't make it to the city dump! The history would have been lost forever.

                                Mark,

Great find. This makes us all think of the priceless things that have ended up in the dump. We are all glad this piece of world history did not.

                                Best regards.
