Hi all!

A friend of mine has had this gorget for years. He wanted my opinion on it, in terms of originality and price and I don't have a clue. I never collected these types of items, and I have not kept abreast of the repro market on them. Could I get an opinion on this for originality and price. It looks good, but so does a lot of other stuff out there now a days

Chris, this looks good. A bit worn and no chain, which affects overall value. I've seen these go for around $1000 or maybe a bit more with the chain. This would probably bring about $6-800 retail.

Hi Chris,

This gorget plate looks original to me, though the absence of the chain would limit it's sales ability IMO...for example, I would not buy a gorget that was not complete. My assumption is that the manufacturer of the gorget plate also made the chain...at least that is the case with the example in my collection. Both parts RZM-marked the same. If that was standard -- and I am not positive that it was -- then anyone purchasing this piece would need to find a complete chain marked with the same RZM license code...which would greatly limit the likelihood of finding a matching chain. If you were considering buying this gorget plate, my advice would be to let it pass; there are sufficient complete examples out there in the marketplace. Just my opinion, of course!

Br. James has a valid point. Finding a chain is a pain. You could be looking for one for quite some time and these aren't rare enough to warrant not getting one that is complete. However there are those that do like just the gorget as a display piece and don't care about it being complete, and if the price is right, it might be a good buy. Regarding the chain being marked the same, I've seen lots of these with mismatched chains. I am assuming some were cobbled together after the war but many probably received replacement chains during their time of usage as well.

i believe a gorget with mismatched chain is same as bayo/dagger with mismatched scabbard c...just my HO .... EC....

Interesting that Assmann & Sohn used his M1 RZM number ....M1/17 on the chain, and his M5 RZM number....M5/8 on the Gorget.

Appearing to be mismatched, but in fact perfectly matched......

While Frank & Reif used their M1 number....M1/102....on both the chain and gorget.....

I've also seen an M1/128 chain matched with an M1/102 gorget. I'll see if I can find more mismatched sets.
