It looks fine to me, other than the corrosion and missing backing cloth/RZM disc.

            Hi Berra,

I like it, too! Sad about the missing backing material...

Great to hear!!! I made the mistake to buy before I asked so I am relived that it was all OK.

Regarding the missing cloth how was it attached to the gorget ? glued ?

It will display pretty well with my SS and SA dagger I think.

              Thanks

Sorry, Bjorn, but I really don't know exactly how the backing material was originally attached to the gorget frame...and I wouldn't want to make a guess. Hopefully someone else here will be able to enlighten us.

And no, you didn't make a mistake with this one! Best wishes,

                Br. James

Most of the SA/SS gorgets had the wool glued on. There was at least one maker that used a crimp around the reverse side that held the wool edges, but the center portion was glued as well. Likely, it would have been animal hide glue or mucilage.

Thanks for the info guys! Where the rzm mark attached with pins or glue?

                        Best regards

As I understand it, the metal RZM disc was affixed to the felt backing by adhesive, and on a number of examples the disc has either fallen off or has gotten detached over the years. But when that happens, there often remains a tell-tale mark on the felt where the remains of the adhesive still exist.

Actually, the disc had 2 prongs on its reverse which were stuck through the wool and spread, like those of a cap button or eagle.

Guess I've never noticed that, Erich. The one or two examples I've see...probably here on WAF...seemed to have a bit of circular glue residue where the RZM disc was originally affixed, but I didn't notice any slits or tears where prongs would have punched through, or where the disc was torn away. I'll have to look closer next time!
