    SA Sports Badge opinions

Gentlemen, Does this one look OK to you?

    Hi Vaughn,

Yes, this piece looks OK, though it's obviously had a very hard life! It's an SA Military Defense Badge in Bronze, 3rd Issue, and the maker was the prolific W. Redo of Saarlautern.

With the great number of pieces produced by the Redo firm, perhaps the town itself is of more interest than the badgemaker? Located in the industrialized Saarland of Germany, the League of Nations placed this region under the control of the French Government for fifteen years following WWI. Saarlautern's earlier name was Saarlouis and it was re-named thus during the French occupation of the Saarland, but when the region voted overwhelmingly to be re-joined to Germany in 1935, the town's name was restored to Saarlautern in order to make it sound more 'German.' From 1936 until 1945, Saarlouis was called Saarlautern, but at the end of WWII the Saarland region was again occupied by France. In a plebiscite in 1955, most of the people in the Saarland opted for the reunification with the Federal Republic of Germany, and on January 1, 1957, it became the 10th federal state of West Germany. Much history here, no?!

    Cheers, my friend,

    Br. James

          Hi Grave,

I'm not sure what you mean by "type 1" here. As I understand it, the First Issue badge bore the wording "Eigentum D. Chefs D. Ausbildungswesens" (Property of the Chief of Training Staff), the Second Issue "Eigentum D.S.A. Sportabzeichen Hauptstelle" (Property of the SA Sport Badge Main Office), and the Third Issue "Eigentum D. Obersten SA Führung" (Property of the SA Supreme Command) -- as this one carries. Kindly clarify.
