    Hi Magnus,

GPB #1319 was held by Pg. Kurt Hunger of Weimar. Hope this is helpful to you I've seen this badge before -- a nice one, even with the broken pin.

      I agree - a beautiful piece with a been-there look.

Hate to be the skunk at the picnic, but I am not fond of this badge for several reasons:

          - can't see any stippling behind the red enamel
          - lettering on front looks odd and too regular, like modern typography
          - pronounced center ridges on oakleaves
          - doesn't look like mercurial gilding
          - verdegris is not often seen on these badges due to materials used
          - This style of Deschler pinplate is commonly only found on current high-end fakes (secret is the bottom edge should be curved, not straight as below)
          - numbers look stamped, not impressed. Might be the photo, but there seems to be slight puffiness around the numbers.

No problem, Stephen, and your well-developed knowledge and experience of the GPB is always welcome...at any picnic! I also share at least some of your concerns with this example, though as it appears to be perhaps ground-dug, I made certain allowances for what many years of that sort of mistreatment and degradation can do to such a piece, including the gilt finish. I also made allowances for the photo quality; I did notice that the stippling behind the red cloisonne enamel did not show through, and the letters are a bit oddly accentuated... But I do think that the center ridges on the oakleaves appear to be OK, at least considering the photo and the conditions this piece may have suffered over several decades. Always IMHO, of course!
