SA badges in gold were only numbers up to 6000 or 7000 if I remember correctly. I think its a polished bronce

Hard to tell i dont like the number for a gold one.

the classes (bronze, silver, and gold) were awarded with different criteria. The Bronze was awarded as the actual sport award, while the Silver was given to those SA members who were certified as Sport Trainers. The Gold class was awarded only to the actual 'PrĆ¼fer', that is, to those SA members qualified and certified as testers.

                Hi Eric

I have the same badge, same maker with similar "goldish" colour (base metal is brass right?) and serial 228007 but I found out from a thread here it was a bronze piece 1st issue. On first issue badges (text behind pin is different for the 3 issues so it tells you what issue your badge is) Schneider is notorious for extremely lightly toned bronze badges so they actually look more like gold rather than bronze but they arent. This was corrected for later issues (2/3) by this maker I beleive from picts of specimens offered for sale showing "normal bronze pieces but I only have one the same as yours

                Regards

                JC

The SA sport badge was instituted in 1933. In a period publication listing statistics from 1938, it attributes a total of 1,437,199 awarded in all grades through 1937. It does not give a breakdown of the grades. In 1939 the designation was changed from SA Sportabzeichen to SA Wehrabzeichen.

Considering the DRL/DRA badges for the general population were awarded in gold from its inception in 1913 to 1938 a total of 16,649 times, one has to wonder about the total for the gold SA. One also has to consider the award criteria was different for these two badges with the DRL/DRA being awarded in the differing grades based on age. The gold was awarded for successfully completing a series of events for those over age 40. The SA badge, as far as I am aware, had no age based weighting.

Thats right - E.Schneider SA sportbadges were tombac pieces and if the bronce is migrated or polished so they look like gold

No, not so much - only ~ 3.500 Gold grades and this gold grades were between the numbers 1 to ~ 7000
Because gold grades were only for the examiners / silver for the instructors
The normal SA man could reach only bronze !
That changed in 1.10.1935 - all instructors and examiner had to pass the bronce grade like all other and in 1937 they all had return the silver and gold grades to the SA Leadership.
This is also the reason why only so a few gold and silver grade exist.

From march 1937 are this the rules for the silver and gold SA Sportbadge

                        (after bronce award):

4 repetitions exercises in one year and this over 5 years long = silver grade

                        (after silver award):

4 repetitions exercises in one year and this over 6 years long = gold grade

or, between the repetitions exercises the SA member became 35 in this time = silver, or became 40 = gold

Also, aren't Gold grades only made by Christian Lauer?

Just a question if there were only 3,500 gold badges awarded, why do the
numbers go from 1 to 7,000

Grave, to your point, there was not age based weighting but there was weighting based on the number of years the exercises were done?
