This could very well be an original in my opinion. As to the "total lack of quality" it must be remembered that by 1942 enamel was replaced by paint and tombak was replaced by zinc. It would help to have better pictures. I have never seen or heard of this rare badge being reproduced. We should not be too hasty in making a finding that this badge is a fake.

I have to agree with the earlier assessments that the badge is probably fake. When you look at Nazi artifacts, since they were often "cottage-made" items by small manufacturers, there IS a hand-made "un-perfectness" that you often see. A good example would be a standard Party badge. If you examine the lettering, the letters are often uneven in thickness, etc. But the OVERALL appearance is almost always perfect. Whether it's the enamel inlay on a HJ Dagger, or the center of a Party badge, the swastika is ALWAYS symmetrical, with parallel rays. Lettering is always even in height unless intended. I don't see that "evenness" in this badge, and the reverse reminds me of when you're at a gun show, and turn the item over to see the reverse, then IMMEDIATELY put it back in the case, smile, and say thanks, as you try to politely scurry away, muttering to yourself, "what a bunch of junk!" under your breath.

Please notice that I didn't say it's fake, as though I'm an expert on these. I'm comparing with the workmanship you usually see on such items. I've seen oak leaves on an SS Candidate's degen scabbard that were quite crudely done, which I've heard is not uncommon on those. But it is certainly an exception to the well-executed German craftsmanship they're known for. So anything is possible. But if I was at a gun show and someone asked me if they should buy it, I'd say "no".

Well I have heard of this badge being reproduced, & I have seen them years ago,- it was reproduced by Rudolf Souval of Vienna, & is on their 1971 Sales Listing, item 11/82. Theirs was not marked & this is not one of theirs.
