Austria (Ostmark) Into the Reich (10.4.1938) Silverware

    Hi Folks,

I would like some comments on this set of silverware I picked up years ago when I was in Germany. 1st off...I bought them because of the date ....but I din't know anything about them. After a little research, I found that the date and OSTMARK was for Austria.

    Thanks,

10/4/38 was the date of the general "election" held in Germany to put before a "vote" among the German people as to whether Austria, occupied by Germany the previous month, should or should "not" be admitted to the Greater German Reich.

No secret how that vote went.

        98% Ja.

Yes....I bought them for the date (didn't know the specifics) and the Ostmark when I saw them in a fleamarket in Germany. After I got home...I researched and found this out. I wonder why they would create silverware sets celebrating the event/election. hmmm!

Very interesting set! I don't know the reason for the production of this set, but my guess would be that it was intended for presenting to some government or political office/persons as a remembrance gift from the Krupp Berndorf factory.

Very nice utensils - they appear to be original, and they're probably rare.

Thanks......I have another piece in addition to this set. I haven't seen other pieces like this...could be rare and then again...maybe not. I just like the history....and the search.

The history is why most of us collect.
