It can be more than just one mark. I have rings with 800, but many times with addtitional marks tiny in nature, but detailed in design denoting such things as makers and countrys of origin...for example roumania marks when their pp rings were all the rage during ww2, and likely prior. I generally expect to see a european silver mark, although i did find one marked 925, i believe the 800 silver rings were more durable than higher content silver rings ,for practical field wear , so expect to see more with 800 ballpark marks, but carefully inspect the other marks many times full of dirt grime etc making a mark look like a pock of sorts. I clean them carefully when oblitereated with crud..with an electric razor tiny cleaning brush only in that spot, then take good photos of them for reference. some extra marks are in the shape of a tiny coffin and tend to get dirty with field wear. So just wanted to encourage a closer inspection, than just looking for the 800 range marks. I got most all mine from vets, and at the time few collected enemy jewelry, watches or such, but the vets were always so proud of their personally taken items , and werent that expensive like today...especially with all the fantasy fakes, or copies of originals they sell currently. You also must search sites of ring sellers who carry the fakes, like langenbacker fake police badges it pays to study these sites of makers , who sell em as fakes to the disreputable , and helps rule out the more commonly made , and found fakes , so keep searching here also. Occasionally some good ones turn up. If you have the chance to score and hang on to 5 or 6 good pp rings in 30 years you are fortunate...but you have to do your homework, and still its a minefield. There are thousands of them lost to time waiting to be found , and we all keep our eyes open looking...so hope this helps, and ask questions and see what they know about the ring when they are selling it as to where they found it. Really seems we need a section just for pp rings.
