Opinion needed on a ashtray with political / SSeagle.

I found this one in a flea market today here in Quebec . Its the first time I ever see such a piece, no idea if its good or not and even less idea of the value.

To me the astray itself look like period but no idea if the eagle may have been add later or original to the piece. Its made of some kind of white metal accept for the round removable part who seem brass to me, this part look like the bottom of a bomb shell in term of material. Dimension are 6.5 by 4.5 inches.

Any help on good or fake, value and why such a item may have been given/ made will be appreciate.

If moderator feel like it will fit better in another forum feel free to move it, I thought it may be some kind of a political gift.

Thanks for your posting, Manu, though I agree with wewelsburg that the eagle and swastika stamping appear to be faked. I can't clearly see what the other markings on that flat portion of the display ashtray are, but they look like they're supposed to be European hallmarks. This, too, would be an indication of fakery at work, as hallmarks were/are normally applied to undersides, reverses or edges of pieces in order not to conflict with the overall design of the piece. If these are supposed to be hallmarks, they don't belong on a visible portion of the piece.

      Thanks again,

      Br. James

Cannot comment on weather the item is authentic or not, but the raised portion of the ashtray where the marks appear would not have been visible since the raised portion is intended to have a box of matches on it.

The box would have been partially opened so that a match may be extracted to light a cigar or cigarette.

Thank for sharing opinions guys. There no other marking at all on both side of the ashtray. My guts feeling was telling me the ashtray is period but the eagle have been added at some point.

I guess value is for what it is, a period 1940-50 ashtray with a added eagle on it. At all I still find the dog pretty cool!

          Thanks again!

You're so right, Ron, and I should have remembered that...I'm of a certain age!
