    NSKK Rider helmet

    Gent`s,

This item I have acquired is not within my field of knowledge.

I should me most grateful for the opinion of fellow collectors with experience
    in this type of helmet.

My only observations are that it is undeniably a period helmet and that 2 of the 3 retaining prongs for the emblem have been repaired with what looks like araldite or similar.

Of course being period does not make it an official helmet!

I am uploading numerous pictures in the event that I should decide to move it as this kind of item is not really something I am particularly interested in.

Thanks in advance for your time.

NSKK Sturzhelm with 2nd pattern Eagle with scroll. IMO original and period Sturzhelm, but hard to tell from the pic, I think it has been heavily boot polished or similar, the finish not quite how you find them. Both 1st and 2nd pattern birds not uncommon to have broken prongs. I think who ever Glued the prongs also "restored" the colour on the helmet. Just IMO, Johno

                Helmet

Looks like an original helmet, but the emblem looks fake. IF the emblem is real, it was VERY POORLY made, and would have to be end of war. Regardless, just not normal NSDAP quality on the emblem. Looka at the wreath. My goodness.

Thank you for your comments. As I have said I am not familiar with this area. I have looked again at the emblem and can only offer my observation that it is certainly old judging from the oxidation on the pins and reverse. The front is painted but again this would appear to be old.

Dou you know if it is possible to determine if original?

I do not recall ever seeing any of these emblems regularly on offer that one would expect if they had been produced in quantity by fakers.

I would like to know if it is ok regardless and all constructive comments are of course welcome. If youknow anything you probably know more than me

The helmet and the emblem on the front are original, but the plate has been poorly repainted as well as having the prongs "glued" on ......not in the "Best" condition, but collectible if the price was "reasonable".....I can remember when "minty" examples of both the 1st & 2nd Model were $90.00 and fairly common! A minty example runs in the $500./650. range. This one's not even close to that IMO.

The Eagle plate should be replaced on this one....so price it accordingly! The rest of it appears complete and undamaged...didn't really see the chin strap & buckle well enough....would hurt big time if broken or damaged.

                      Thank you John.

Well it is nice to know that it is at least original.

The chin strap is complete and there are no cracks in it.

Were these emblems originally painted then? I am just wondering if it would be worth cleaning it off or just leaving as is? I really wouldn`t think it would be worthwhile to replace it. it displays pretty well as is.

                      Thanks & regards!

If you can safely remove the black repaint without removing any remnant of the original paint and not damage the aluminum, it would be worth doing. Looks all original except for the repaint and possible helmet body refinish.

Thanks, I can`t say if the body has had any touching up. It is like a patent leather finish, it has not been black polished but I did put renwax on it to protect the finish. Nothing came off on the cloth but that is why it may seem a bit shiny.

I wouldn`t know how you could remove one layer of paint without another but perhaps there will be some info in the restoration forum. My instinct is to leave stuff alone but in this case i`ll certainly think about it if it can be improved.

Thanks again; all the comments have been very helpful and I`m much obliged.

                            Emblem

When I was first looking at it, I couldn't tell if it was the paint or not, because the "NSKK" letters looked poorly executed. Your "over-paint" theory makes sense, especially considering the attempt to "spiff up" the leather. Considering that it's already been monkeyed with, take these guys advice and restore it like they say. These usually go for over $900, so it's worth fixing properly.

PS: Maybe you can remove some of the high-shine by scuffing it across rough fabric, like an old sofa with stiff material. Try it lightly on a small area first.
