Recently there has been much discussion concerning what kind of thread was used to attach SA collar tabs and SA collar piping. I'm posting closeups of my shirt to help others. The thread that attaches the COLLAR PIPING is fairly typical of other 3rd Reich era thread, and this is what I like it to look like. But the TAB attachment thread almost looks homemade here. This accentuates the previous point that tabs were often removed for laundering, and home-sewn back on. NOTE: Compare the collar piping to the "shiny" looking piping you're seeing lately on some hokey-pokey shirts.

SA Piping and Tab Attachment

On the shirts I've owned and examined, the thread used to attach the tabs to the collar is generally
a. cotton thread of the color of the shirt
b. cotton thread of the color of the tab
c. cotton rayon blend in the colors listed
Occasionally any type of thread was used (for example, black thicker thread is sometimes seen), which was probably used because the man/family had it on hand to re-sew buttons on clothing.
The thread used to sew the piping to the collar is usually
a. cotton thread in the color of the shirt
b. cotton thread in one of the colors of the piping
c. rayon or other artificial silk type blend when the piping is a rayon blend.
Again, button sewing thread in black or other common colors is occasionally seen.
The piping is generally cotton, rayon, or cotton/rayon blend (for the 2 colored piped types). The cotton has a 'rougher' appearance as seen above, whereas the rayon blend is 'shiny' and has a silk like appearance. Finer cotton can have a pearlized appearance and look somewhat like silk/rayon but the fibers have a different thickness and character.
