Very interesting and thanks for sharing. With ears as big as he has/had, I can see how they could be damaged!

But he had only problems with his right ear ("schwerhörig auf dem rechten Ohr").

Working with a MarineFlak unit it may have helped him a bit to sustain the noise of the gun.
