    Mother's Cross Authentication

    Hi Folks,

I picked up a small grouping of medals last night including this Mother's Cross. I do not normally collect Mother's Crosses, so I cannot authenticate this as being pre-45. It does look and feel "right" to me, but I have little experience with them. What do you think? Thanks. -Ger

    Hi,

I got several silver ones and they look different to yours. The engraving on the back, the blue inlay on the front and the rays especially look different. Don't want to say yours isn't good as I am not a mothers cross specialist but I do have my doubts. It could also be a difference in makers though.

Here are two pics for comparison.

I'm not at all convinced by this example. The quality isn't there for an original cross and the inscription on the reverse is nothing at all like I would expect to find on an original. See below.....

A definite copy IMO. As Os said the sunburst has rounded points the enamel work
is lacking to say the least and the inscription is sloppy, and the ribbon isn't period. IMO this cross was not meant to fool the collector rather it is meant as a reproduction or a space filler.
Many retailers sell this type of Mother's Cross for around $10.00
As to the theory of different makers, there are differences between makers, but not this noticeable.

            Hey Adrian,
Interesting Cross with the retaining ring, never seen one like that before. Very nice.

In my opinion, the first MC is way to sloopy to be an authentic cross.
And that is based on all the "flaws" already mentioned.

The first one is without a doubt a fake, and a really bad fake too!

                Everything is wrong with this......

Thanks guys. The seller suspected that it would be a fake and it was sold as such to me. Thanks again. -Ger

                    Hi Ger,
That's a relief, because if it was a real one you would have probably
gotten addicted to these also. Kvk's are a bad enough addiction.
I happen to have both, plus a few more.
