The best Kepi ref book is Wim Saris' "Headgear of Hitler's Germany, Vol 3", and Gill Halcomb's book "The SA" is pretty good overall.
Period books and magazines also show lots of SA photos.

That's the question I was wondering.

There's not even one book about SA uniforms, insignias, headgears, flags, miscellaneous released in the last 10 years with HQ pictures ?

I bought recently the book "Uniforms of the NSDAP", it doesn't have so much text but that's enough to understand and the pictures are beautiful. If a similar book about the SA was done I would buy it directly. No one from you is interested by this project ??

        Hi Blaise,

Just as you said, Jeff Clark's now-classic work, "Uniforms of the NSDAP" (Schiffer Publishing, 2007), is simply a stellar reference for anything to do with PL uniforms and accessories. If anyone could persuade him to do a similar work on SA uniforms, I can only hope they succeed -- it would be fantastic!

There are very few books as comprehensive as Jeff's is in terms of Party uniforms. As Wessel added, "The SA: A Historical Perspective" by Jill Halcomb (Crown/Agincourt Publishers, 1985) is certainly a mainstay on the subject, IMO. An earlier four-volume series entitled "Uniforms and Badges of the Third Reich" by Rudolf Kahl (published by Military Collectors Service in Holland, circa 1973) includes "Volume II: SA - NSKK - SS" which contains much information and a striking set of drawings of the uniforms and accoutrements. While long out of print, copies are still available through book-finder services on the internet.

Hope this is helpful to you, and I'm sure we all hope we can coax Jeff into taking up this task to the betterment of us all!

          Hi,

I do not believe that there is a single book on the market exclusively devoted to SA uniform, badges and insignia.
As stated in previous posts on this thread, the SA are a chapter in several more general "NSDAP Uniform" books; but I have never come across an SA book.
Considering there were millions of SA members over the TR period, and they played a significant part in Nazi history; I wonder why this is so?
There are a few excellent period publications which show many SA uniform styles, but no modern reliable reference book!
Matbe one of the forum experts should consider writing such a book, I am sure many collectors would buy it!

          Best wishes,

          John.

            Books

"Cloth Insignia of the NSDAP and SA" by Angolia is excellent reference. Though devoted to insignia, there are MANY period photos of SA uniforms in wear.

I must agree with Stonemint's last note, though the only one of the four that covers the wide realm of "a good SA uniforms, kepi etc reference book" -- which you originally asked about -- is the work by Jill Halcomb. The others specialize in some of the many facets of SA uniforms, but Halcomb's book addresses the entire subject. Of course, given the limitations of page space and time, the other titles do go into much more detail than she was able to provide in one reference book.

And as I also mentioned in my original note, I have found "Uniforms and Badges of the Third Reich" by Rudolf Kahl (published by Military Collectors Service in Holland, circa 1973), Volume II: SA - NSKK - SS" to be quite useful as a general reference. While long out of print, copies are readily available through book services.

                        Hello Bcreatif.

Look in the books for sale section now.

Some of the great books mentioned are for sale at a good price now from TobyR.

                        Chris.

Unless you find it at a bargain price, I'd skip the Halcomb book 'SA-A history'. There are numerous mistakes and really not very much information presented. I bought it when it came out because of the photos of the SA sleeve bands (more are pictured than in the Angolia book) and a few closeup shots of Stephen Wolfe's DE. The SA history presented isn't 100% reliable and very little research was conducted.

I'd add the David Littlejohn book 'Hitler's SA' published by Osprey. It's an inexpensive book but is 98% accurate and provides a good overview of the SA and its insignia.

Several members here and I have been working on a set of SA volumes (there is too much information to fit into 1 volume!) over the last 5 or 6 years or so, with research being gathered over more years, but it's slow going. I would say that we have enough information to fill several volumes at present, but there are still a number of unanswered questions that don't come up in any period documents or regulations--not super important stuff but it's annoying not to be able to find the answers. For example--why and to whom were the SA Walther PPs issued, was there ever an intention to allow a specific Marine SA dagger, identification of some uncommon SA insignia, specifics on some of the specialized SA uniforms, etc.

                          Erich
                          Festina lente!
