    exciting stuff eh ?

Welcome to the exciting world offffffff " Hoheitszeichen "

    Hi to all,
as we all know pratically all of the state run services had some type of uniform, with a hat and a cap eagle.

Some times the the difference between two types of uniform eagle can be just the colour (gold / silver ) which can be diffulcult to assertain from period photographs, and the colours are very different as with army and navy helmet eagles (may be a zinc eagle would absorb the guilt). Toby i do not think your smaller eagle is `gold` in colour just tarnished ? i have a luft cap eagle similar

One other difference can be the size of the eagle which can also sometimes be diffulcult to judge, and to quote Lothar Hartung booklet page 20/21 :-

DRB railway eagle 57mm gold coloured.

DRP poastal eagle 48mm silver coloured.

Strassenbahn (tramway) eagle 37 mm silver.

Hope fully the sizes will help you, so the larger is DRB and the smaller is tramways IMO

any one else have an opinion ?

      Hi Ashley,

Thanks for the info. I measured my badge and it's 57mm but silver in color. It looks very much like the one on the estand that I posted here that is attributed to Railbahn. I think we're zeroing in.

I have "German Uniforms of the Third Reich" by Brian L. Davis. It has colored drawings of various personnel. In plates 226 - 228 he shows German State Railway members wearing blue uniforms with blue caps and gold eagles. I guess the clue to the 57mm silver eagles is the red colored cap (different rank, different railway jurisdiction, or ?).

          Hi Ashley,

I'm pretty certain it's gold (traces of finish remaining) but I'll try and get a better photograph tomorrow.

          Best,

          Toby.

            Location of makers mark

I have a question for the ones in the know on cap eagles. Where are you likely to find the makers marks? After reviewing this thread, I looked at the three that I have and to date, don't see mark one on them. I posted pictures of the back sides.

                  Leftfaced eagle

Wolffen started a thread "Help indentifying eagle" 01-10-2004.
There you´ll find another option as to the origin of the leftfaced
eagle. You can also see parts of the RZM-marking in the center.

Can anyone confirm the facts stated in Bender´s book
                  "The Luftwaffe"?

                    Hi Greg and Peter.

Greg not all eagles are marked though usually party ones have a maker code (i.e. M 9/102 ) and a RZM mark though there are exceptions and some of the W/H, K/M, can have maker marks or initials and dated.

Peter can you describe the facts you are refering to ?

                      Hi Ashley.

This illustration is from Bender´s book "The Luftwaffe" from
1972. I´ve never seen anything related to this topic anywhere
                      else.

The winged insignia for civilians is supposedly made in aluminium.
Any pics out there of the obverse and the reverse?

btw, did you take a look at the eagle in the other thread?

                      Regards
                      Peter

Here is mine. 57 mm and in silver. Have we reached a conclusion what these are? I first thought SA, then I read this thread and realised I was mistaken? Are we settled on Railways?

                              Cheers, Ade.
