According to Tom Shutt's book,It was a 12mm matte silver pebbled button.

The RZM guidelines indicate an 18mm button for the front of the cap.

Thanks, Erich. I have Shutt's book & noticed that mistake as well. A 12mm button is the size for the front of an M43 cap, only using 2 of course, not 1.

Not only was Erich correct, but the regulation was obviously adherred to, as my Lagermutze's button is exactly 18 mm. The button has a tiny RZM logo and a mfgr's code number (145). Interesting is the fact that the pebbled button on mine is shinier than other silver buttons you usually see. I will post pics later.
