Although regulations called for tacking the tabs by hand and removing them when the shirt was to be laundered, occasionally machine sewn tabs are seen on apparently original examples. The numbers on the tabs are not regulation--at this time they should have been chain stitched, however the OSAF frequently sent reminders to the units about this indicating that other forms of stitching had been seen and were forbidden. If the white threads don't glow under UV and if the thread used is cotton or cotton/rayon, you would be hard pressed to say with certainty that the shirt was not originally in this configuration.
