The silverware was stored in the basement of the Berghof, not locked up in a safe. Who would rob Der Fuhrer's home? There literally thousands of pieces of flatware plus serving platters and misc. pieces. I own one of two Martin Borman tunics that were found in the basement of the Berghof. The soldiers looting Borman;s house dropped thier loot in the basement of the Berghof and decided to help themselves to the silver instead. The man who brought back the two Borman tunics also brought back serving pieces and a service for eight. He also assisted the famous woman war correspondant Aline Nofal liberate a service for eight of Berghof china also.

This silverware was not found in a safe or in the basement of the Berghof. It was found in a locked closet at the Kehlsteinhaus. It has nothing to do with the Berghof. Mike

        Hey guys,
I just happened to obtain one of the items from the same source.
How are you storing these precious items and have you cleaned them up with anything? I am just curious as to what'd be the best thing to do in that regard. I am personally leaning toward just letting the item be, but I have heard that the silver might need some TLC. What do you think or what have you done in this regard?

I used to own around 30 pieces of this formal pattern. Its pretty easy to come by and for around $7/800 mark, however agreed Bills stuff is nice with the provenance and all.The real hard to find bits are the servers and cigar cutters etc,knives/forks and spoons are of course numerous in any dinner set.
I'm down to a set nowadays as I used the funds to spend on medals. However I retained this really interesting cut down piece. The story behind it is interesting and makes sense.Apparently a bunch of these were dug up behind the Berghoff after being metal detected some time in the 70's. The story is,and this I can easily believe ,is that the townsfolk managed to get to the Berghoff in the period between the French followed by the Americans and after the SS had legged it. They then hacked off the nazi emblem and buried them, taking the silver back to the town and of course no association to the regime to be found in their homes.
So here we get a very rare glimpse inside the silver core of these desirable pieces of silver.

            Front on.
This is one of the neatest pieces in my collection actually, the 'damage' is erelevant to me I would not swap it for a complete and mint piece.
I also have someplace an AH formal pattern dinner knife that has been used to hammer in nails or something at some time !!

Any cleaning involved, or have you just got them framed right away? I would not mind getting a tip or two on how to protect this historical item........
