A Statue From Goering's House? - Out of Woodwork

A local lady contacted me yesterday about a statue her uncle brought home from Germany after WWII. Her uncle stated he picked it up in Goering's house and was a special presentation item.

She said she has seen this exact statue in the movie Schindler's List just by chance, that I have not confirmed. She did take it to a local antique dealer and he said it's worth $2-4,000.

    Any opinions would be appreciated.

            Jeff,
Can you make out the inscriptions on the base?
            Thanks,
            Peter

Hi Peter - Unfortunately, I am on the road and had these sent to me via email.

I asked her to tell me what it reads, but she couldn't pronounce the writing. We have only talked on the phone so far and I will have to wait to visit her when I return next week from a biz trip.

                Its definately in German...(Austrian?)
What I can make out on the base is:
On the front "H.Koch" or K.Koch" or "H.Kock" (maker?)
                and on the backside :
                Wiener Kunstwerkstatten gebr. B...........(name: B.....?)

                "Wiener" = Viennese
"Kunstwerkstatten" = artwork dealer, art distributor (or foundry?)
                "Gebr" = (gebruder)= brothers (+ name maybe?)

So "Viennese art dealer (or foundry?) Brothers B......"

                  BINGO!!!!!!!!!
I found the full name using google!!

=Wiener Kunstwerkstätten Gebr. Brandel ed. (dealer/distributor or foundry info)
See links to other examples here:
(one from a different artist but claimed to be from the same period dealer/distributor or foundry in Vienna)

                  http://www.artnet.com/artists/lotdet...4F9B041DF530B0

and the same maker (artist) as your (offered) piece here:
                  H. Keck
                  (Deutscher Bildhauer. Tätig um 1900-1925)
this one signed by H.Keck fec

                  http://www.konrad-antik.de/keck.html

                  and another one here:
                  http://www.zeller.de/en/katalog/auct...and-1900-1922/

and another offer: (go to lot number F1277 "Bronze Nude by Hans Keck"
                  http://www.sheryls-artdeco.co.uk/bronzes19.html

and a current e-bay listing by this German sculpture artist:

                  http://cgi.ebay.com/Hans-Keck-Roman-...d=p4634.c0.m14

So definately a German Artist (from Munich I think) and active in the early 20th century (1920's)
which would make the Goering house story (he loved nudes) very believable!

PS: I know crap about this stuff...power of the internet!!!
                  .

Well done in tracking this down, but I would hesitate to make the leap from "produced in Germany/Austria in the 1920s' to 'being found in Goering's house.'
He was more into bronze hunting and forestry pieces than nudes, I think.

Nick, that is wonderful work you did there, that is much appreciated. Really, thanks. It does seem the statues are collectible for sure. No doubt the Vet brought this home with him.

Could be it was the spoils of war from some other higher ranking person, and as the story was told, the person became higher ranking or it could be Goering's statue. Certainly, one would not expect to find this art in a farm house.

I told her on the phone yesterday, without a photo of it in Goering's house or a photo of the Soldier removing it or an inscription, it would be tough to say for sure. I did say I was certain it was collectible in it's own right regardless.

Nice detective work Nick. Very neat piece Jeff. Good luck with obtaining it and whatever you decide to do with it.

You are welcome Jeff. This Sherlock Holmes stuff is fun!
The likelyhood that it was taken from the home of a nazi big wig like Goering is
pretty good. A believable story! No doubt its a bring back souvenir from the Reich!
I can imagine that a (young) US soldier would pick a scuplture with this topic (a nude fraulein)

                            To wessel:

Göring was for sure interested in nude themes.

In his sleeping room (his wife Emmy had a sleepig room there for herself) right under the ceiling of his huge bed hung a lovely oil painting of a nude women, painted by the famous Third Reich artist Werner Peiner to whom Göring had a personal friendship and whom he supported by translocating the art section of the Kunsthochschule Düsseldorf to a new erected and found Hermann-Göring-Meisterschule für Malerei in Kronenburg/Eifel.

By the way: the buildings there are still in original condition and it was there were Hitler´s order of creating ten big wall tapestries for decorating the long floor in the Neue Reichskanzlei - depicting the ten most important german battles in history - was to be fulfilled.
