                Hi All,

Just thought I'd post a very simple tribute to the Mahnmal Monument this time with only the wall plaque, classic period postcard, frosty 2nd pattern Blut Orden and of course the 9th November 1923 to 1933 10 year commemorative medallion. I will also post a couple of additional pics of the medallion as although we usually only see battered, bruised or knock-off versions of these, this one is a very nice conditioned original- straight out of Germany and with almost all of its finish remaining and only slight wear to the highpoints. It depicts an early NSDAP eagle breaking the chained shackles of mortality that were binding it to the fallen comrade draped in the Blutfahne and soaring above the Munich Mahnmal towards the swastika sun rays. The reverse shows the Mahnmal eternal flame and something like 'keep you in eternal life good comrade'. Unfortunately this is not the much more sought after 'silber' version but I believe still worthy of showing nonetheless,

                Cheers,

Btw, what is that little eagle on the ribbon?

A GREAT display, Michael! Congrats on every level, my friend!!

I am not familiar with the 10 year commemoration medallion, but I'd love to own one anyhow! I suppose my lack of familiarity is due to the rarity of the piece.

Your deciphering of the medallion's symbolism is interesting, though having seen the symbolism of breaking chains of bondage in other NS eagle symbols and a variety of other media, my take on this would be that the eagle represents the National Socialist Spirit or ethos as it breaks free from the bonds of oppression -- the Nazis always saw themselves as being oppressed by the German and the Bavarian governments, either Weimar or its predecessor, and they symbolized that sense of oppression as being shackled in slavery. "Freedom" -- "Freiheit" -- was the word which self-symbolized the NS Movement throughout the Kämpfzeit, and breaking the chains of oppression was an ever-present mantra.

Of course the helmeted soldier laying in front of the FHH, still clutching his beloved NS banner (probably the Blutfahne) represents the "blood sacrifice" of all who died during the Putsch, and ever since -- the Putsch being seen as the beginning of the NS Revolution to take back the nation from Marxist/Leninist oppression. The NS Eagle ascends toward the bright SUN -- depicted in the form of the gleaming swastika as it dawns over the FHH and the Odeonsplatz, bringing that NEW DAY that the Hitler Movement champions.

Thanks again, my friend -- a GREAT display!

Great display Mike! Thanks for sharing, really outstanding stuff!

Just a question - why were there chains on the eagle's talons? Were these meant to signify something?

                        Hi Mil,

Check out my note #714 below regarding the chains -- just my opinion, of course.

                        Cheers,

Chen, The eagle has nothing to do with the BO and most likely added later.

Michael, all I can say is congrats on a very impressive and classy Mahnmal display my friend!

Some have thought that these putsch medallions were given to the families of the fallen. Most likely they were sold at the 10th anniversary celebration of the putsch. Either way a great piece.

Thanks for your comments guys, much appreciated.

Chen, Erich is correct, the B.O just had the silver NSDAP tie pin on it when I found it. Br James, I prefer your explanation of the symbolism of the breaking chains as National Socialism breaking free from the chains of oppression- thanks for the interpretation. I was just guessing as there is not a lot of information out there on these commemorative medalions. I agree with Erich that these examples were probably just sold at 10th anniversary celebrations and nothing more although maybe the much nicer and rarer real 'silber' versions were possibly given to the families,

                            Cheers,

Thanks. I am just a learner of BO's thing so a lots of questions to ask.
