In fact I think it would complicate thing without a valid reason to do it from a construction point of view.
Typically multi part construction was employed when the 'top layer' of the striking was bigger in size than the 'base' thus making the single striking impossible or if different materials were used.
That could of course be determined looking at the cross section of the specimen where the supposed layers meet.

The book by S-C gives us some insights into the 'Coburg Affair' but his timeline as pertaining to the award itself seem to start about a month prior to the official Ceremonies. It has been a while since I had a pleasure of flipping through the pages of the book so correct me if I am wrong but nothing there indicates who really (and most importantly when) is responsible for the idea of this award's inception. I think we can agree that S-C's call to order 600 badges was but a product of a process that started some (long?) time prior to September 1932.
Was the idea of this award's inception born at a Beer Hall somewhere in Germany when the events of times past were discussed amongst those that took part, was it strictly a politically motivated move that had little to do with honoring those that were there, was it Hitler who suggested the creation of it, S-C or a group of Alte Kampfers when having drinks?
To answer your question- I am not aware of any other period publication giving more insight into this award unfortunately.

    cheers

Matt, I am only providing the owner's description of the piece. Chris described it with the provided images as a multi-part construction. I just thought I would add the information for the forum members here. I have no dog in the fight. Here are his exact words that he said to add to the forum should I wish. But you are certainly entitled to your own opinion.

"As to the 2 badges they are chalk and cheese. The silver badge is constructed from 3 parts. The wreath, the swastika and the sword. The wreath has the swastika attached then the sword is placed over the swastika.the wreath edge is hand filed. So a rather complex piece of jewelry construction. It measures 55mm from the pommel to the base of the wreath. It has a width of 39mm and a thickness of 5mm.the the breadth of the wreath is 8mm."

Besides the text in Schwede-Coburg's book, there is source documentation provided in the two magazine articles I mentioned earlier in this very long thread by Klietmann and Patzwall that include referece to the September correspondence between S-C and the Kanzlei. There is more in the archives.

Another variation that is pictured in the Mickey Huffman book of Hitler's favorite Political awards, appears to be a 2nd pattern badge with no RZM mark but rather a stamped number 1 in the middle of the swastika on the reverse. The mystery continues......

Somehow I have missed the last couple of posts here.
Yes, even though Mickey is in no danger of receiving a Pulitzer Prize for his photography, what needs to be seen is relatively easy to see there. A badge marked '1' under the pin. As he mentions it came cased as well and that would be only second one I am aware of. I must say for me it definitely points towards Deschler being the firm behind the badge.
Does anyone know if Mr. Huffman is still collecting? Does anyone have any other pics of his badge that could be shared here?

        cheers

It will be interesting to find out how much the Coburg badge will be sold in the upcoming HH auction in December.

How much do you think it will go for, Chen? the final hammer price, not including commission fees, shipping, import tax and credit card charges.

Depends on how many bidders and how badly they want.

We know of at least one ...

And it comes with a rare tinnie, the Alte Garde Spandau.

                      Jon,

Blutordens are too many. CBs are more exciting to find.
On a serious note aside, how about a pic of your Coburg Badge please?

And which is to me, the one I would want to own.

Very nearly traded With Helmut for that one.

                              Great badge Jon.
