    Adolfs hitlers iela

Iela is the Latvian word for street / road.

                  Found this Info :

In 1936 the triumphal arch is replaced to the park Viestura verplaatst (north of the Elizabethstreet). This park was the first public city-park, in 1721 on order of Peter the Great constructed as 'Emperors garden'.
In 1870 a part of the Alexanderstreet get the name Alexander Boulevard , now a part of the Brivīdas Boulevard.
In 1923 the name Brivības-street, Freedom Street, is introduced.
During the German occupation in World War II the name became Adolf Hitlerstreet (1942 tot 1944) and the Brivīdas Boulevard became of course Aldolf Hitler Boulevard.

I am curious, why would it say "Adolfs Hitlers" instead of Adolf Hitler?

this looks like a very interesting streetsign ..., great find ... would be nice to find a photo of the sign in use in Riga. This is a photo of Adolfs Hitlers iela in Riga today ... http://riga.in/2008/02/brivibas-street.html

                        Cheers, Torsten.

A street in Italy named after the Pope will be probably named Via Benedetto even though his name is Benedikt in German.

It must have something to do with that in some languages they change foreign names and places into local language

                          for example:
                          Brunswick / Braunschweig
                          Cologne / Köln

Can any of our WAF Latvian members tell me if this would be the correct way you would spell this sign in Latvia ?
