It was issued by the vital registration offices. Everybody who wanted to marry needed it

The family register was (and still is today) issued by the civil registry office, which is usually located in the mayors house (comparable to the Department of Human Services in the US).

Interesting is the page containing various examples and/or proposals for German first names.

Yes, I noticed those names too. They were included as aryan suggestions. I have yet to come across some poor German kid called "Fuerchtegott" ("Fear of God")! I wouldn't mind being called "Frowein" though.

We've got one of those books at home from my wife's German family.

Those names were recommended but it gave no instruction to use them. The parent could chose what they want. Only hebrew or jewish names were forbidden.

There were also a lot of names that only sound like genuine nordic ancient names, so called nordic-ideologic names like Gundomar, Gerhild or Rune.

Only about 2% of the germans named her boys Adolf. From 1939 is was getting more and more unpopular.

Most of the people used the traditional german names who had nothing to do with germanians . This had also to do with the fathers and grandfathers names because it was tradition to gave them into the next generation. It was also normal to give three first names. And there also local Traditions: Benedikt Josef or Anselm for example is typical for the catholics region in south germany like bavaria. And names like Harro, Klaes or Tarde are from the friesian region.

In the protestantic regions of middle germany the names of old Kings were always very popular: Friedrich, Karl, Otto and August. Also names from the mediavael era like Walther, Gustav or Hans.

My first names are Michael Friedrich Wilhelm. Friedrich and Wilhelm are the names of my grand fathers. Today these combinations are getting rare, because the people like to choose very special names like "Chenekwahow Tecumseh Migiskau Kioma Ernesto Inti Prithibi Pathar Chajara Majim Henriko Alessandro" and make their children hate them for that.
