Evidently, the sipo police used these to torture subjects. Any experts out there care to coment on the sipo police and their methods.

I'm not sure about "torture" (although getting hit with one would be no picnic). This style of cosh was popular with the early SA as well in street battles with Communists. These spring-loaded, telescoping batons were easy to hide and carry and could be used as a very effective club. In fact, modern police in North America still use something similar - just watch "COPS" for the telescoping baton.

They were also used for crowd control (maybe in the camps and occupied areas) and presumably when a gun wasn't considered a good idea (or not available).

Are they marked Sipo on the end cap?

I think the differences are too slight to be of any concern..

As far as I know the postwar versions did not have the Sipo end caps and had green leather...

The end caps are steel and of course magnetic. The usually loosen over time and will spin..

Mine which I'm sure is 100% is like your top one in photo #1
also the tip looks like the right one in photo #4
and has the same end cap on right of photo #12

I am assuming there are few of these around in most collections, except the previous person who commented on having one. If so I would appreciate seeing other ones, or variations if possible.
