how did they get the ribbon so dirty?

The ribbon- aged to look the part no doubt, try rubbing on a car tyre, or tea staining,they try all sorts of tricks to fool people.

If memory serves, this reproduction pattern was introduced in the 70s. I remember the lettering that runs up 'the hill' to the thick rim as well as the eagle's head detail. If so, the ribbon may have been on the piece for nearly 40 years, and it would have been more difficult to keep it clean than to let it get dirty over that amount of time.
