The card which Stu showed is currently up for sale (not by him) and on first glance it looks like a standard HJ shooting badge award certificate. Look a little closer and you can see Axmann's facsimile signature at the bottom. The card is dated 23rd of March 1938. Axmann's signature as leader of the german youth - in 1938? Nah... He didn't take over from von Schirach until 1940. Also, this boy would have been 14 years and 3 months old at the time of award. This means that within 3 months of leaving the DJ he had passed through all 3 classes and had qualified for the HJ shooting badge. It took HJ boys an average of over a year to achieve the same level. There is a remote possiibility that he remained with the DJ as a leader after reaching his 14th birthday (the DJ leaders were allowed to receive the HJ shooting badge) but still, he was way too young so that discounts the possibility that this award certificate was issued in retrospect during Axmann's tenure as Reich Youth Leader.

This card must be a fake. What do you think guys?

Only the pocket itself was stipulated Willie and the pictures I have seen show the badge worn centred.

Ok, I now have 'HJ im Dienst' 6th edition dated 1940 and at this point only the Scharfschütze badge is described. The standard which had to be met for award of this badge is as follows:

Prone (weapon supported) - 10 shots must achieve at least 100 points
Prone (weapon unsupported) - 10 shots must achieve at least 95 points
Kneeling position - 10 shots must achieve at least 80 points
Standing (weapon unsupported) - 10 shots must achieve at least 65 points

Prone (weapon unsupported) - 5 shots )
Kneeling - 5 shots ) must achieve a combined total of
Standing - 5 shots ) 130 points

Rapid fire - 3 shots - all must hit the scoring area of the target. Time to complete: 1 minute

The above tests are all shot on the standard HJ target at 50m.

The following, and last, part of the Scharfschütze test was shot on a 'Figurenscheibe'. The book doesn't describe the exact size or appearance of the target.

Prone (weapon unsupported) - 5 shots three of which must hit the target.

I have one of the standard HJ targets which was used on the 16th of March 1940. It shows the result of a boy's attempt at part 1 of the Scharfschützen test above. As you can see, he was successful with 102 points.

thanks for the extra info and the photo of the target just shows even at the young age most took these tests they where still expected to reach a very high level

Cheers guys. Until I started looking a little deeper into these badges I had always looked at that target and thought 'yep, HJ shooting target'. I did wonder why it had ten holes though instead of the five it should have had and now I finally know why. I'm still trying to find the standards for the Meisterschütze badge and I'll post them here when I get hold of them.

Thanks! This is exactly what I wanted. But when I asked before:

Hi Willie, the HJ badge with blue sections instead of the regulation red is a post war fantasy item.

The HJ shooting award was not worn on military uniform. For more info on that award checkout the political forum.

Bringing back up an old thread to ask a question. When a HJ entered the Wehrmacht to be sent to the battlefront did he wear his HJ badge on his tunic, whether it be a drillich or otherwise?
