    HJ shooting badges

As a result of a question posed on another forum I started to look into these HJ shooting badges. So, we have the three levels of badge:

    Basic
    Scharfschütze (silver wreath)
    Meisterschütze (gold wreath)

The HJ shooting book shows three levels of shooting:

    Anfängerklasse
    Ausbildungsklasse
    Sonderklasse

Three badges and three levels of shooting. Seems pretty 'open and shut' especially when the leading reference books make a definite link between level and badge. I have to say that until I started looking into this a little more that I also believed that each shooting badge was linked to a shooting level in the shooting book. This actually isn't the case though:

A boy had to progress through the three stages of shooting proficiency (Anfängerklasse, Ausbildungsklasse, Sonderklasse)listed in his shooting book in order to qualify for the award of the basic HJ shooting badge. I have a shooting book from 1941/42 and it shows that the boy went through all three levels and was finally awarded shooting badge number 197,326 so clearly the normal shooting book seems to have nothing to do with the award of the silver and gold classes of the badge and this at a time when both the silver and gold class of the badge were in existence. Various sources show the introductory date for these as 1938 and 1940 respectively.

On another forum I found a thread containing pictures of all three classes of the badge taken by the grandson of the recipient. All are authentic and the award certificate for the silver and gold class is exactly the same as that for the basic badge. This begs the question of whether there was a special HJ shooting book for these other badges. The standards of shooting would clearly have to be higher than for the normal badge but I've never seen a HJ shooting book other than the one usually encountered. Does anyone have any information on the award (and award criteria) for these badges? Were they perhaps awarded for the achievement of exceptional results at a Bann or HJ-Gebiet shooting competition?

there seems to be very little info about on these badges, if what is being said is you had to pass all levels of shooting before being awarded the shooting badge,is it poss that after a member completed all levels a badge was awarded depending on your results the higher your marks the higher the badge.
would make sense of why there are far more of the standard badge available.
if you only had to acheive 60-70% for standard badge 70-90% gave you the silver and over 90% gave the gold
    just a thought

Cheers Stu. Yes, that's a possibility but all of these achievement awards were usually recorded on some kind of official document (in this case the shooting book) before being sent off to Munich for registration and issue of the badge. I'm assuming that if there is a book for the basic badge then there must be one for the higher classes. I could be miles off but the digging continues

Does anyone else have any thoughts on these badges? It would be good to get to the bottom of this

Ok, I've been digging a little more and yes, there was a special shooting book for the Meisterschütze. The book covered both the silver and gold badges and the book pictured shows the award of both classes. Mmmm... better get me one of these I think

That one is for the standard HJ shooting badge Stu (the second badge from the top in the picture).

I'm awaiting delivery of 'HJ im Dienst' 6th edition from 1940 which I'm hoping will show the requirements for the award of the Scharfschütze and Meisterschütze badges. I'll post any new info I find in this thread.

Glad to have got to the bottom of the discrepancy shown in Angolia and Littlejohn at least though.

Hi, sorry to just chime in like this, but how and where exactly do you wear this on the HJ uniform?

                          Hi,

The badges were meant to be worn on the left breast pocket but this was often ignored and so you'll see them pinned to the right breast pocket too.
