    An interesting GI souvenir from 75 years ago today

    I recently picked up a nice set of GI souvenirs removed from Hermann Göring's Obersalzberg house and the Berghof on May 21 1945 – 75 years ago today. The guy was in the 328th Engineers, attached to the 103rd Infantry.

    One of the most interesting pieces was this child's coloring book, once belonging to Edda Göring and bearing her name. I believe she died a couple of years ago, aged 80.

          Thanks for all the nice comments.

          Here are 2 other pieces from the group, all from the same veteran.

          The wooden disk is marked as a "ventilation disk" but I'm honestly not sure what it is. I need to go through the period photos some more and try and find it.

          The light switch – I have managed to find a '3 gang' example of the same style at the Berghof. It's not often that happens...

          I will take better photos when I have these in hand. They are at a friend's house at the moment, and I was hoping to pick them up this summer.

          What's interesting is that these were all taken on May 21, suggesting that anything intrinsically valuable was long gone by the time.

            That would actually make sense if that is what it we're. Though, you'd think there would be some sort of of adjustment or the fins would move (these look like a solid piece) to direct airflow.

              Yeah I agree. I also wonder if a ventilation hatch – i.e. exposed to damp or moist air - would have been made from wood. Like I say, I need to dig into the period photos to see if I can find it.

This expression was identified by Eric Partridge in his Dictionary of Forces' Slang ( 1948 ) as being used in the context of an intense bombardment in which the enemy fired everything they had except the kitchen sink (or including the kitchen sink).

                    "I wonder who got the kitchen sink?"

                    He's saying they took everything, as if the only thing left to take was the kitchen sink.

                    Very interesting pieces and the coloring book that belonged to Göring's daughter is very unique. Congratulations on the find!
