I can't give any conclusive evidence, and I don't claim to be an 'expert', but I've never been a fan of this style of piping for SA leaders' tabs or as collar or kepi piping. The standard twist piping as seen on SS Leader and Luftwaffe Officer tabs and tunics, for example, with a shinier and smoother appearance is what I have normally encountered.
