Police Generals Should Boards Show n Tell

Hi all, recently got these general boards. One pair plus a single. Thought to post them here for your viewing pleasure. Comments are welcomed, and let's see what others are out there.

Your exceptional photos show that construction is totally different on these two examples. With so many excellent fakes on the market I must ask if there is any accepted standard for these boards.

I never tried to collect these so I have no clue. I think I know what a good eagle would look like, and perhaps even a tab, but the boards, no. The good and the bad are so close as to make it impossible to believe sometimes.

        Regards,
        W. Unland

Thanks for the reply Bill. And nice general eagle there!!

That's part of the reason why I posted these, wanting to see if there's any more out there to look at for references.

I was just informed by a knowledgeable shoulder board collector this morning that the single one shows traits of being a heavier early braiding.

That bird really should live in Japan....Scotland.....nooooooooo!

I see the Chinese bards all the time. The bullion really looks good. The give away is lack of age and off wool backing. I've never taken one apart so I don't know what's inside. I know these are still made in Germany for shooting clubs and such, i honestly don't know how to tell if one is good other than " feeling". I have never seen any objective analysis.

Yours look fine. I'm not so sure about the eBay offering. The center "silver" looks white to me. The silver on your single is really nice wire rather than Russian braid, like imperial insignia. Quality!

In any case nice close ups. Did you use a real camera for those?

                Regards,
                Bill U

Thanks Bill, didn't need a camera for this one. Just a standard iPhone camera over a LED jeweler loupe. I was surprised how they actually turned out okay.

                    Hello all,

After a week of constant researching, cross referencing, and communicating back n forth with several knowledgable collectors, I think I finally have all the info I need to confirm these boards that I posted. I figured to share my finding here, hopefully they will serve as a good reference for future collectors. If anything, just a documentation for myself.

Start off with the pair of Generalleutnant. These are the slip-on boards that has the outer gold cord made out of celleon, in lieu of bullion wire. The center silver cord is the Russian braid style, which is most typical for this style of the general boards.

The pair is a little shorter than most others, it is very possible that they were to be worn on a shirt.

Here is a good read on the celleon material. With excellent close-up photos. A fairly common material for officer rank insignia.

The single Generalmajor board required much more time to look into!!

The green base is a velvet-like non-wool material. It has a slight silky feel to it.

The board is braided out with metal wire. The center silver cord is basketweave instead of Russian/soutache braid. Unknown to most, it is simply a manufacturer variant for the general ranks.

It took awhile to find any others like it in terms of the braiding, but with the help of others, I tracked down three other examples in Heer version. Two currently for sale on Collector's Guild, one in the archive section on the Marshal's Baton. Pics attached.

Really hoping to see more of these Police general boards out there if anyone has any!

                      Best,
