Indeed the backing looks like felt and both the upper part of the left runic S and the lower part of the right runic S don't appear well finished.

These were posted before in 2017, I'll add the pics. Some good / detailed pics could make a big difference, easy to loose / lack detail in photos and there is no substitute for an in hand inspection.

Anyhow, this example appears on regular Pol wool with a wool backing of twill weave that provides the appearance of being a 'cutoff', maybe they actually are, difficult to say w/o providence.

There are a number of past threads where variations are posted and also seen in period photos. Not all were 'perfect' despite being fairly simple design/construction, they are hand embroidered and talent or lack of does play part. Also age, storage, use, etc. will play its part on condition.

Alain, exactly what wool are you questioning, that on which the runes are embroidered, or the stitched on twill weave?
