Wow, now that is an interesting photo

I wonder if he is a military policeman wearing orange soutache and waffenfarbe, the rarest of them all for Afrika and early tropical uniforms.

The leather belt still being worn is also interesting. Is it brown or black ? I wonder where the photo was taken ? Afrika ? Italy ? Greece ? Balkans ?

I have linked it to the uniform forum http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru....php?t=1016530
    and the headgear forum http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru....php?t=1016531

Lets see what others think/ say

    Thanks for posting,

    Chris

Maybe he's just wearing a police buck,no different than strange combos with army and ss period pictures
Give a man an opinion and you feed him for a day,
teach a man to use the "search" function on the WAF and you feed him for a lifetime.

As it is a nice studio photo it would be easy to guess he was at home and decided to wear his "previous occupation" belt. Being an NCO and only having the German-Italian medal would suggest he was a orange-piped soldier.

            Cheers Jody,

the belt is interesting in more ways than one. Having studied many photos of the Italian campaign 1943-45, it is rare to see the tropical web belt or high tropical boots being worn.

The tropical uniform when worn in Italy from 1943 onward seemed to consist of the tropical cap, tropical tunic and tropical trousers worn with the continental leather belt and leather boots . See the Jager image below. Note the shoulder straps, are they tropical twill or wool ?. Far less tropical shoulder straps were worn in Italy after 1943.

Now we can not see his boots in either phto but it would be interesting to know where and when both photos was taken ?

There were a high number of Police and SS Police units fighting Partisans in the north of Italy and the Balkan countries bordering onto both Italy, Austria and Greece,

            Chris

There are some good images of Police and Field-police on this thread

              https://erenow.net/ww/kettenhund-ger...orld-war/2.php

I am adding the images of the Police and Field-police in tropical uniforms from the thread as an interesting comparison with the photo which started the thread.

Both the tropical cap with Orange soutache and tropical shoulder straps with Orange piping are a holy grail of collecting WW2 German uniforms,

I wonder that too. Althou we don't have any direct indication this man is a Feldgendarm, may I point out that the embryo of Feldgendarmerie consisted of almost 8,000 cops from the Motorized Gendarmerie and this dude might be a veteran from that draft who has preserved his original Gendarmerie buckle.

Yes I agree that is possible. However, as the photos that I have added to this thread in post number 7 show. Military Police in tropical uniforms wore a hotch-potch of insignia combinations ranging from regular tropical WH uniform with Orange piping to Orange Police eagle on the sleeve,

Sure, I was already aware of those pics but whereas the Police style sleeve eagle and the Feldgendarmerie cufftitle (along with the gorget) were branch distinctions for Army Feldgendarmen as per regs, the Police style buckle was not. Hence I've assumed there gotta be another reason for an OrPo buckle having been worn.
