It's also mounted correctly (inscription on the obverse, cypher on the reverse).

So there you have it: The side with "für Kriegshilfsdienst" is actually the front and the side with the Wilhelm II cipher is the reverse. The four bars I posted in this thread are mounted correctly, according to the regulations.

          Thank you & best regards,

Indeed, thanks for that information. I guess it seems strange to me because all British and Commonwealth awards with the King or Queen's head are always mounted with that as the Obverse even though the interesting features are on the other side.

            You're welcome!

By the way, getting back to the commonly incorrect wear of the Kriegshilfsdienst cross: The most famous example of a decoration being worn the wrong way around is the Iron Cross of 1813:

It, too, was originally supposed to be worn with the side sporting the crown/cypher/oak leaves/year on the reverse and the blank side on the obverse.

However, the vast majority of recipients wore it with the more decorative side to the front, and so King Friedrich Wilhelm eventually approved the former reverse to become the obverse in 1838.
