    Sleeve Eagle

Was recently offered this police sleeve eagle. I haven't seen this pattern before and was wondering what others thought of it?

The eagle presented is a real one. Here are two examples Bill had and I hope he doesn’t mind me borrowing his photo of two other examples of this type of eagle. I believe he said they were early eagles before they became more standardized. NJ

Doug, this is an earlier pattern often referred to as the 'coke bottle' variety and doing a searched here by this reference will return a number of examples posted in the past, mostly posted by Bill U. The example you have posted is unusual in the sense the swastika is matching the embroidery and not black as seen for non FW branches. Maybe an early FSP variation / error that was subsequently corrected to black?? Would you also have a picture of the reverse?

I just picked this FSP one up at the MAX. Same pattern with minor difference in the neck area. I have seen other eagles with non-black swaz before, and wondered what they were for. I don't suspect the ones I've seen were fakes, I wonder if it indeed was an error.

These same color swastikas are a result of not changing thread.when finishing the eagle. Maybe a mistake, maybe a lazy machine operator, maybe no black thread available. They are perfectly good and can be seen in period photographs. Most, if not all that I have seen are carmine, and it could be that the machine operated was used to making one color Feuerwehr eagles and don't know he was supposed to change the thread when making the same eagle on green rather than blue.
