My First New Police Medal Bar in Years!

Medal Bar

Could the last medal be a 1918 Commemorative Wedding Jubilee award for the King and Queen of Bavaria? Issued on Christmas Day to soldiers.

What is that last Bavarian medal?

That is the Bavarian Golden Wedding Anniversary Medal, commemorating the 50-year union of King Ludwig III of Bavaria and Maria Theresa of Austria. It was originally intended to be given as a token to Bavarian troops on Christmas of 1918. But with the ending of WW1 and the fall of the Bavarian Monarchy the medal was never handed out as intended. It was subsequently given out in 1921 as an unofficial memento to those in attendance at the former King's funeral. Some recipients of this commemorative medallion had an eyelet attached to the medal and then wore it suspended from the ribbon of the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold Jubilee Medal.

The ribbon on Vince's medal bar does indeed look like the ribbon for the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold Jubilee Medal. But I have to wonder if the Wedding Medal is original to this bar. It seems odd to me that there are no other decorations from Bavaria on this bar. And the Luitpold Medal does not seem like a possibility either for the same reason: (an absence of any other decorations from Bavaria).

Perhaps the red and green ribbon is actually meant to be a ribbon for a WW1 decoration from the Ottoman Empire. (Order of Medjidie or Liyakat Medal). The disruption seen at the suspension area of the Wedding Medal suggests the possibility that something was removed and replaced.

Hi Vince,

Despite the oddity concerning the Bavarian Wedding Medal (mentioned in my previous post) I think this is a very nice and original police medal bar. Congratulations on your new acquisition. It is difficult to be absolutely sure about the Wedding Medal being original to the bar. It seems unlikely to me but stranger things have happened. If we only knew the real history of these medal bars we collect. Many of these bars have changed hands amongst collectors numerous times. And these bars are old and sometimes things fall off or get removed intentionally and then replaced or restored by a subsequent collector or dealer. In some cases, decorations (and more so orders) had to be returned upon the death of a recipient.

I'm pretty sure that the Bavarian Golden Wedding Anniversary on this bar is the correct one as the ribbon for this medal is green to the ribbon edges, where as on the Order of Medjidie and the Liyakat Medal both have thin red stripes down the outer edge of the ribbon. In this case, I feel the medal is correct and has just been reattached.
