        Keith,

I have never seen piping sewn in like this. Very odd. I would not buy this cap personally as there are too many questions and issues with it for my taste. I hope this helps.

          more information

          Hi everyone,
Thank you all for your opinions.

I found a very similiar one on warelics.com website. It's an army officers though. It is item #24 under the visor category. It has the same stiffener and construction throughout. Even the buttons are the same.

Hi Keith, you got it in the end then!

            Here's a few observations.

The fine wool material used and shape of the cap looks correct for a wartime bergmutze. The colour also looks right IMO.
I believe the buttons are made from wood or horn but not bakalite. Also correct.
The edelweiss looks to be of wartime manufacture i.e. 5 stitching holes instead of 4 post war.

            Fine so far, but..

The leather sweatband does look rather new. Could it have been replaced, any evidence of that?

If it's true to say that only very early police caps had the piping on the crown, then what's it doing on one that has late war insignia and an RB number? RB numbers only came into use in late 42, early 43. You'd have to double check the statement about the piping, I have no idea if that's true or not.

I wouldn't give up on it yet, try posting on the headgear forum.

              buttons

              Hi Ben,
I was told the buttons were possibly made from "Steinnuss"Corozo nut? or burlled wood.
The leather band looks original to the piece. It is stitched with the same thread. The leather is a bit hard and is loosing its pliability.

If you look at the one on warelics.com you will see all the similarities the two caps have.

Has anyone handled a hat like this before? Does anyone have another one we can compare this to.

I showed it to Bill Moore of Military Specialties in Newington CT yesterday and he said he would have no concerns about buying the piece himself. He looked the piece over with a magnifying glass right down to the thread construction. He spent about half an hour going over it. He also showed me a photo of a policeman wearing a similar looking cap in an old issue of The Military Advisor.

              Keith

                  Thanks Ben

                  Hi Ben,
Thanks for the links. I've looked at them and registered for the site also. I didn't know there were so many forums out there.

While going through my photos for the book I am working on I found a couple of pice with Policemen wearing similar style caps with the high peak and pinched top. I wish they had color photos back then so I could see if they were piped or not.

Thanks again to everyone who responded to this thread.
                  Keith
