    Amateur boxing medallion

    Hello all,
Not sure whether this would be the correct forum for me to put this in but I have a question regarding a 1941 Breslau amateur boxing medallion as shown in the attached picture. I have one for Essen for 1939 and I have seen one or two others for 1941 but the size of mine and the other 1941 medallions I have seen have been roughly 3 ½ inches in diameter. The one I show here is supposedly bronze class with a size of 60mm. Can anyone tell me whether these came in different sizes depending on the class and date? From the little I can see this one looks the same as mine & others I have seen except for the size. Also any idea what an item like this would be worth
thanks for any help or info

        Hi Bill,

I have a number of these non portable boxing awards, plus a few smaller pin back badges with the same design.

Can you get a picture of the reverse of the one you show?

        Cheers
        Don

          Hello Don
Hope all is well on your end. Here is a picture of the reverse, not very good and I had to zoom in on it to see the makers logo but it looks very much like the marking on the medallion I have, but as mentioned the one I have is over 3 inches in diameter. I quite like the design of these items and have seen a few of the badges you mention but unfortunately up to this point have only acquired the one medallion which is for Essen in 1939. Thanks again for your reply and info

                Hi Bill,

From what I can see from the pictures I can't see anything wrong. All of mine are 80mm, just a fraction over 3 inches & the badges are much smaller. I can't post images here anymore as I let my membership subscription lapse.

There are fakes of these floating around, but they are easy to spot as they are poorly made casts & not enamelled.

I've never got a handle on what these things are, whether they are participants medals given out to all of the boxers who took part. Or whether they are winners medals only given to the champions etc.

It is possible that they were graded, I do have some that seem to have a bronze finish rather than gold, but I had put that down to age. However this means that there should also be silver ones which so far I have never seen (but that does not mean that they do not exist).

Did you measure the medal or were you told the diameter? Personally the size doesn't worry me the medal looks OK from the pictures & going by those I'd be happy to have it in my collection. Let me know if you decide not to go for it.

                Cheers
                Don

                  Hello Don,
thanks again for your info. Concerning the size that is what I got from the sellers description of it. I may contact him just to see if that is correct because as you also mentioned the few that I have seen are slightly larger than three inches. He says it is a bronze one. I also thought that the item, mark etc look good but not having seen any in the size he mentioned I put in my query here. These are quite nice looking items for sure. Any idea, roughly what an item like this would sell for? Again, thanks for all your help and info.

Price is difficult as they are not that popular. I've picked them up for as little as $150 up to $250, but I haven't bought one for a few years so the prices could have changed.

                    cheers
                    Don
