    Police license plate

    Hi

Maybee this is wrong to ask about this Police license plate here , but i try here.

This number plate POL 111637 is found in the Toila - Voka area about 5 miles from Narva, Estonia. In this area during the winter, spring - summer 1944 were workshops, stores, hospitals and other service facilities for the fighting troops at the Narva front. I wonder now if there is any possibility of identifying this license plate to any particular Police unit or vehicle ?

    Best Regards

According to the Oct 1942 extension of the police license numbering system, 111637 was included in the six thousand numbers designated for the Reichsprotektor in Bohmen und Maehren. Sorry, but there is no further breakdown of issuance. Perhaps there is a chance that a nearby number might be seen in a photo album.

        Police license plate

        Hi Dave C and JoeW

Thank you for your help and I understand that it is very difficult to identify vehicles or units. I'll have to search around the internet for photos on Police vehicles and see what it's giving. But now, at least I know this "111637 was included in the six thousand numbers designated for the Reichsprotector in Bohmen and Maehren"

        Best Regards

Here are a couple of close ones,

          POL-113303 (I.SS.Pol.Rgt.Bozen, North Italy late 1944)

          POL-100994 (Gendarmerie-Zug (mot) 50 - Motorisierte Gendarmerie - Belarus (Weißrußland) May 1943 - May 1944)

          & one that is not so close but a colour example POL-11669, (believed Norway);

As an aside, most license plates of this shape seem to have been used on motorcycle/sidecars.

              Police license plate

              Hi

Thank you for helping with photos and the tip that it may have been on on motorcycle / sidecars. I am also of the opinion that this is the case.
I would also like to show you the second sign found in the same area.

Unfortunately, not so much of letters and numbers are visible, so yes, I'm not sure how to clean the sign. And unfortunately the black color seems to drop from the white background color on the plate. But I will show it on the "Achtung Panzer! Forum" here at WA then I think it belongs more there to my questions.

For reference, here are a few examples of this shape in use as the Rear facing plate on Polizei/Sipo cars throughout the war :

It seems the longer the licence number the more pronounced the (rear facing) plate shape becomes.

As the 1st Bn of Police Rgt Bozen was active mostly in Istria and in the Kvarner area, later in the war moving to Ajdovščina and Tolmin (both in Slovenia), I believe that this photo was taken in these territories, not in Northern Italy.
                  Nice pic, by the way.

Thank you for the pictorial education. I somehow knew you would have some showing the non rectangular plates on cars/trucks.

Thanks for the info on the photo above !

For Id'ing the unit, I think photo albums of SS.Pol.Rgt may be a good bet.

As to who was in Narva Estonia during summer 1944 I am not sure. It might be worth looking at Estnische Regiment Tallin/Reval & Estnische Freiwillige Polizei Regiment 1 (or 2) & other Volunteer units. You might find something in the Munoz book 'Hitlers Easter Legions Vol.1' (I only have vol 2 but it looks like 1 might have more on Estonian units).

Not sure if this is useful but I came across this list of (Summer 1944) formed Estonian units. I saw this while looking for something else completely. The document is from Riga & lists off Latvian ones but also Estonian too.
