The name used in the US is "Black Jack" or sometimes called a "Sap."

      club

Is it a club or is it a fly whip .I have seen these carried in many hot countries .
Properly wrong ????? There are also TR pictures I have seen with mostly officers carrying them. Is the end lead weighted. Then it properly is a club.
      regards Pete

I think it is private purchase or creation. You should try to source it to a period catalog from Akah or Geco before labeling it from the TR era, otherwise it could be earlier or from the post war era. Here is an interesting thread on similar subject matter.

            sorry

sorry if I miss led but my comment (I have seen TR pictures of officers with them)
I meant that I had seen pictures with officers with fly whips NOT the very same item here under topic.
            Sorry for any misunderstanding .
            regards Pete

is the handle soft? or semi ridge/springy?

They have many names,,sometimes with the round ball at end is called a monkey fist. Black jacks and items like this have been around for many years [least 1800s].. Unless you can find in a catalog it is very hard to date.. We have a topic on GDC called 'Tools of the Trade' that show some adverts and pieces like this etc.
