    Pre War Police Shako?

I have an opportunity to pick this one up. I have been told it may be pre war shako due to the black color? Any advice as to its authenticity?

    Thanks Darek

If the body of the tschako is leather then indeed it is a Weimer era piece. In the one photo it looks like the body is fiber. If that is the case it is a NS-zeit piece that has had the green wool removed for post war use.

The maker label is definitely pre or war time manufacture.

The black leather tschakos were used throughout the war by police trainees and auxiliaries. You often see them being worn with the old Prussian blue tunics.

Agree with W. Unland on his assessment. The photo is elusively out of focus in places. The shako cockade gives me pause; perhaps repainted. Either the green cloth cover or badly mothed black Prussian cloth cover was removed. Notice the heat damage on on the welting around the base of the shako above the front and rear visors. I would suspect the visors might have been repainted too. I wouldn't bother with it as it is a junker in my opinion. There are much nicer ones out there.

I would agree, not worth bothering with Shabby looking restoration, patched together with parts. Maker label is for H. Becker & Co, a known war time period maker. Appears this one is also the 027 vs. C2 address which I don't believe a date has been established to a possible relocation.

......fiber could be Weimar as well

However, the Knopf 91 is Weimar, the strap and the plume not.

No vent holes under the eagle, no cloth inlet, so the chance that this helmet has been messed with is close to 101%

Good eye on the chinstrap posts Gerd. The photos are very out of focus, but I can't see any stitching in the holes around the shako top.

I will pass on this one then.

                    Cheers, Darek
