Is this Eagle Order an original pre 1945 item or a postwar copy?

The only markings I have found are on the suspension ring. 900. 21.

A beautiful award, no doubt. Too bad most of the gilting has been lost...possibly due to poor storage conditions over the years.

Nice piece. The gold finish is most likely not lost, these silver based crosses tend to turn dark due to oxidation.

There is a product called " Connoisseurs Silver Jewelry Cleaner " that I have been using for years on my Eagle Orders. It is designed only for Silver and will not hurt the enamel. Do not use a brush but just dip it for about 15 seconds and rinse in warm running water. The decoration will look like it just came off the assembly line. The web site is www.connoisseurs.com

This is what happens to ALL Eagle Orders over TIME !!!

SILVER TARNISHES !!!

They ALL have a reaction to the air like ALL SILVER. WHEN THE EAGLES ARE GOLD IN COLOR THEY TURN DARK BROWN !!!! A LITTLE SILVER POLISH BRINGS IT BACK TO THE GOLD COLOR !!!! IT DOESN'T HURT THE AWARD !!!
