Hello,
All GemPo insignia is rather hard to find. Here is a mint, never used example of a GemPo sleeve eagle named to the town of Ohrdruf, a small town which was a military center and late in 1944 the site of a concentration camp. The town was liberated by the US Army, which explains how this insignia came to be preserved. Most police insignia in the collector's market seems to have originated from areas controlled by the US. US personnel seem to have been more avid collectors that other allies.
The insignia is on felted wool. The pattern is one accepted as having been used during the period. Interesting is the gothic "O" and font used in the naming as well as the period newspaper that was used to reinforce the embroidered name. I have not encountered this before.
As the GemPo was officially dissolved in 1942, I assume that this was liberated from a tailor or effects shop after the war.
This is NOT one of the "famous" reproductions polluting the market. The pattern is similar but not the same.
Regards,
W.Unland
